HOMAGE TO Tornatore: Edizioni

On the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to Giuseppe Tornatore at the Taormina FilmFest, Taormina Arte has created an entire catalogue dedicated to the Sicilian director, edited by Ninni Panzera and published by Silvana Editoriale.
The catalogue reflects, in part, the programme of the Festival’s celebration of Tornatore, dedicating a great deal of time and space to his full-length films but also analysing the director and his work via his documentaries and adverts that he has directed right from the beginning of his career. But the section which includes the catalogue are all essays dedicated to a man who has described the beauty and the contradictions of Sicily as well, if not better, than anyone.
The volume includes contributions from cinema critics that have helped edit the various parts of the catalogue.
Franco Cicero, journalist from the “La Gazzetta del Sud” and vice-president of the SNGCI the National Union of Italian Cinema Journalists, describes Tornatore as a ‘narrator’ in “Lo spudorato raccontatore di emozioni” – the unveiler of emotions-, as the director himself has defined himself. Narrator not only in the films he has directed but also in his work as a producer (“Il figlio di Bakunin”, “Il manoscritto del Principe”, “Due Amici”).
The female figures of his films from Laura Del Sol to Pupella Maggio, from Tiziana Lodato to Mèlanie Thierry, from Monica Bellucci to Xenia Rappoport, are analysed by Maria Pia Fusco, critic for “La Repubblica”, in “Tornatore e l’universo femminile”- Tornatore and the universe of women.
The emotions conveyed in Tornatore’s films are also those of the soundtracks of Oscar award winning Ennio Morricone. Sergio Bassetti, critic and massmediologist, takes a look at the “Trame sonore: la musica di Morricone nel cinema di Tornatore”, while Tornatore’s subjects are discussed by Enzo Sallustro, consultant of Rai Sat Cinema, in “Cinema della memoria, memoria del cinema”.
“Cinema documentario” and “Cinema pubblicitario” are edited respectively, by Emiliano Morreale and Marco Senaldi.
Ninni Panzera, as well as his introduction to the catalogue (“Tornatore e i suoi ‘cunti’”), has also recorded an interview with the director: “Guardare il cinema. Trentacinque anni di attività”- Looking at cinema. 35 years of work.
The book also contains numerous photographs mostly taken at Tornatore’ film sets..
Another work has been published as part of the Taormina FilmFest’s celebration of Tornatore: “Il quarto moschettiere – Quattro chiacchiere con Riccardo Freda” – the fourth musketeer-a few words with Riccardo Freda- an interview made in 1996, which eventually led to the documentary “Ritratto d’autore: Quattro chiacchiere con Riccardo Freda”. The volume is the first of a new series published by Taormina Arte.
