A new focus on the film industry of the Mediterranean

Taormina’s competition from now on will be exclusively Mediterranean, while world cinema will be on view in a new section called Beyond the Mediterranean and in the evening in the city’s ancient 5,000-seat Greek Theater. Sicilian cinema is back, lead by the first complete retrospective of director Giuseppe Tornatore. And, of course, Taormina’s renowned Master Classes, which have been held by such outstanding figures as Peter Weir, Abbas Kiarostami, Michael Douglas and Jane Campion, will continue to give local audiences a chance to come into contact with the world’s greatest directors and actors every morning in the Palazzo dei Congressi. The festival is directed by Deborah Young, an American film critic for Variety based in Rome. Her background in world cinema will make this a year of discovery for press and industry, while continuing in the grand tradition of the Sicilian festival, one of Italy’s oldest and most delightful.
