Plot:
Billy Offer (Drew Barrymore) is a young singer from Bakerfield with more heart than talent. Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) is a poker player whose emotions at the table often undermine his exceptional skill, especially when he is heads up with his father, poker legend L.C. Cheever (Robert Duvall). The one aptitude Billie and Huck seem to share is a knack for reading people – the difference is what they do with that gift. While Huck’s instincts enable him to take advantage of his opponents at the poker table and expertly avoid both emotional connections and long-term commitments in his personal life, Billie uses her intuition to see the emotional truth of those around her and sympathize with their pain. When these two meet, the real game begins. If Huck is going to win Billie’s heart, he must learn to play cards the way he has been living life and live life the way he has been playing cards.

Plot:
Paris, Summer 1984. Manu arrives in Paris, where he moves in with his sister Julie, in a squalid hotel room. He meets Adrien, a fifty year old doctor, with whom he shares an innocent and gay friendship and who will introduce him to the lifestyle of his world. During a boat trip, Adrien introduces Manu to Sarah and Mehdi, a young married couple who have just had their first child. The unexpected birth of a passion and the irruption of Aids, still perceived by the media and by public opinion as a sort of modern and shameful plague threatens the quiet course of these characters’ lives. Each one becomes the actor as well as the witness of a modern tragedy, from which the survivors will probably emerge strengthened although not entirely uninjured.

MALDEAMORES (Lovesickness)

Date: 19/06/2007

Details ->>

Plot:
“Maldeamores” is a trip through some of the more disenchanting aspects of love, with deteriorated characters and absurd situations, framed in an environment of dark humour and cynicism. It’s a slice of our Latin idiosyncrasies, which also shows how intense and intensely flawed love can be. This feature is made of various stories that illustrate, in chronological order, the stages a person goes through in the constant evolution of their ability to love. These are the discovery and disillusion of youth, the search for the object of desire in adulthood, and the confusion between fear of loneliness and compassion in old age. Puerto Rico is a small island in the Caribbean that, because of its small size, constantly emanates a feeling of confinement and claustrophobia. A concrete paradise that dreams of being a big city. This gives us the perfect setting to explore, throughout the film, the traumas and foibles of our collective madness. This is the environment in which “Maldeamores” takes place, each story a small island.

The action is set in Cairo in 1966, but the events are told 30 years later by the narrator/protagonist Na’im. As a six-year-old, Na’im, who lived in the neighbourhood of Shubra where Christians are the majority, fell in love with cinema over the objections and threats of his Coptic fundamentalist father Adli, the social worker in a school. Ignored sexually and emotionally by her husband, Na’im’s mother Ni’mat starts an affair with the Communist artist Mamdouh, who has spent time in a political prison. When Adli gets into an argument with the school headmaster, he finds himself framed and accused of opposing the political establishment. Adli is subjected to extreme humiliation at the hands of the security police. Ni’mat regrets her affair and Adli changes, but he dies in June, 1967, just as Egypt is defeated by Israeli forces. (President Abd El-Nasser tendered his resignation, but withdrew it when the Egyptian people demanded he stay in office).
