Taormina FilmFest 2008
Taormina FilmFest 2008 will take place from 15 to 21 June and will be directed for the second year by Deborah Young.

The final night
With the ceremony of awarding, is finished the 53rd edition of Taormina FilmFest. A night, presented by Luca Vasile and Virginie Vassart, full of prizes and emotions, where the Italian cinema played a protagonist role. Not only for the award to “L’uomo di vetro (The man of glass)” for the best script, but also for the presence of two Oscar Awards Giuseppe Tornatore and Ennio Morricone, who conducted the Symphony Orchestra of the Conservatory “Corelli” of Messina.The winner of the Gold Tauro the Tunisian film “Making of”, by Nouri Bouzid, won as the Best Film and the Best Actor, thanks to the interpretation Lofti Abdelli. Taormina Arte Award to Giancarlo Giannini
The fourth day of Taormina FilmFest will see, this night, at the Ancient Theatre, the ceremony of the Taormina Arte Award to Giancarlo Giannini, he has been just awarded in 2001. One of the most important Italian cinema and theatre actor will be awarded during the night presented by Lorena Bianchetti, a prestigious award for his long artistic career, which has consecrated him among the greatest actors in the international field, his voice has been doped Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas, Gérard Depardieu and Dustin Hoffman. In the same night another very famous actress from all over the world, Hanna Schygulla, will be awarded with the Taormina Arte Award. The great Cinema of this night is, “Maldeamores”, by Carlitos Ruiz Ruiz and Mariem Perez Riera, with Luis Guzman, Teresa Hernandez and Luis Gonzaga. [more...]

“The opening of the 53rd edition has been done in grand style, according to the best traditions of this cinema exhibition which, not only has international guests, but has also presented a selection of high quality films to the public. And the films, we must not forget, should be the real protagonists of every festival. A great maestro of cinema, Giuseppe Tornatore, has presided over the baptism of the Film Fest, which is this year in the capable hands of the new director, Deborah Young, who I would like to thank for her dedication and for the great quality of her work. Taormina Arte Award to Andrè Tèchinè
The third Taormina Arte Award of Taormina FilmFest 2007 edition has been given to Andrè Tèchinè. Tèchinè, one of the most important French directors. Best direction at Cannes Festival in 1985 with “Rendez-vous”, has worked with the most important French actors, and in about forty years of his career, has obtained many prizes. The award has been given by the President of the Italian National Cinema Critics, Laura Delli Colli. The award has been followed by his last screening , “Le Temoins”, with Michel Blanc and Emmanuel Beart.  

Transformers' day
The “Robots” have landed in Taormina. Michael Bay, Shia LaBeouf and the producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (see photo), arrived in the early afternoon in a helicopter. Immediately afterwards their transfer to the Hotel Timeo, where the cast of “Transformers” held a press conference for this season’s most awaited film.The director, protagonist and producer answered the questions put to them by the journalists. Bay confessed to have been really moved when Spielberg, the executive producer, having seen a scene from the film laughed and said “Gimme five!” [more...]  

Giancarlo Giannini and hanna Schygulla
A long embracement between two exceptional interpreters, two actors who have made the cinema history, two Taormina Ate Award. The meeting between Giancarlo Giannini and Hanna Schygulla, awarded at Taormina FilmFest, was one of the most beautiful moments of this festival. For first the award was received by the German actress, who got it from the Egyptian director Sherif El-Bendary. When on the stage was Giancarlo Giannini, he remembered his experience with Schygulla in the film “Lili Marleen”, directed by Rainer Wernar Fassbinder in 1981, who is known as “the genius of the direction”. Transformers' to conquer Taormina first (from "Hollywood Reporter")
"Transformers," the big-budget summer action flick from Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg, will have its world premiere at the Taormina Film Fest, Deborah Young, the event's artistic director, said Tuesday. Young said the premiere would represent the first time a major U.S. film of that stature premiered at the 53-year-old Taormina event. Bay, several cast members and executives from distributor Paramount Pictures will arrive by helicopter in an elaborate ceremony before the June 21 screening. [more...]  

Good birthday Egyptian Cinema
Good birthday Egypt! The Egyptian cinema is 100 years old, and the Taormina FilmFest celebrates it with a gala at the Ancient Theatre, during which many actors, producers, and directors will be present. Among them Hend Sabry and Khaled El Nabawy. Hed Sabry is the protagonist of the short film “Rise and Shine” (in the photo) from a work by Dario Fo, who will screen during the night.The night’s queen will be Youssra, the most famous Egyptian actress who will receive the Taormina arte Award from Pippo Franco.The second Taormina Arte Award will give to the y American actor Matt Dillon, who in the morning made his master class. Lucky You 's day
After the great inaugural event dedicated to Giuseppe Tornatore, the second evening of the 53rd edition of the Taormina Film Fest also offered emotions and the presence of prestigious guests from the international jet set. On the stage of the Greek Theatre there were all the protagonists of “Lucky You”- this evening’s film: the director Curtis Hanson and the actors Eric Bana and Robert Duvall.The Taormina Film Fest welcomed the exceptional cast of a romantic but dramatic story inspired by the director of L.A. Sicilian short films "Intel Centrino Award"
Sicilian short films have come back to the Taormina Film Festival. The 2007 edition of the international film festival, after three years of absence, is proposing the popular competition dedicated to “home-grown” short films, which on this occasion will be called the “Intel Centrino Award”. The artistic direction of the Taormina Filmiest has received countless requests to participate in the competition, which this year is under the guidance of Deborah Young. The short films are just one of the many attractions and quality events of the 53rd edition – from the 16th to the 22nd of June- of the Taormina Film Fest, which this year has its richest ever programme of events for the entire film week. Taormina FilmFest unveils program of 53rd Festival
Deborah Young, the American film critic and “Variety” correspondent who this year became the new director of Sicily’s famed Taormina Film Fest, unveiled the program of the 53rd festival, which runs from June 16 to 22, at a press conference today in Rome. The Taormina Film Fest is organized by the Comitato Taormina Arte composed of Mr. Carmelantonio D’Agostino, mayor of Taormina, Mr. Salvatore Leonardi, president of the regional province of Messina, and Francantonio Genovese, mayor of Messina and supported mainly by the Regional Tourism Board and General Office for Cinema of the ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. A new focus on the film industry of the Mediterranean
The 53rd Taormina Film Fest, held in the magnificent Sicilian coastal town from June 16 to 22, turns the page this summer with a new director and a new program. Beginning this year, the festival famous for the Taormina Arte Awards and world-renowned guests from Elizabeth Taylor to Tom Cruise, Lana Turner to Quentin Tarantino, will become a very special meeting point for the cinema, filmmakers and producers of the Mediterranean. "Who's afraid of Film Festivals"
The discussion organized on last Saturday, in Cannes, by Taormina FilmFest on the theme “Who is afraid of Film Festivals” aroused considerable interest among the insiders. The night, organized in collaboration with Hollywood Reporter, saw the participation of artistic directors, cinema critics, producers and directors, among them Ferzan Ozpetek (his film, “Against Saturn ”, obtained six nominations of Nastri D’Argento Awards).Moreover Pappi Corsicato and the General Director for the Cultural Activities, department Cinema, Gaetano Blandini. Taormina Film Fest announces the retrospective of Giuseppe Tornatore
The International Taormina Film Fest (June 16-22) was present at the first edition of “Le Festival du cinema Italien” in Paris. At the Festival in Paris, the night’s guest of honour was Giuseppe Tornatore, who Taormina Film Fest will dedicate a complete retrospective of his works. Also in Paris, with the presence of the film director, the artistic director of the Taormina Film Fest, Debora Young, illustrated the highlights from the retrospective. The new artistic director, in departure for Paris, stated “It is a wonderful occasion for the Taormina Film Fest to be part of the festival in Paris with the great Sicilian director Giuseppe Tornatore. Taormina FilmFest in Cannes
This year too the Taormina FilmFest will be present at the International Festival in Cannes. Deborah Young, the artistic director, is presently continuing her work in preparation for the festival (which will take place from the 16 to 22 June with a wealth of events and famous guests) on the Croisette, where people from the international world of cinema meet every year. Taormina Arte will be the protagonist, in an evening organized by the Taormina Film Fest and the Hollywood Reporter, with the participation of the Union of Italian Cinema Journalists, of a conference on the subject “who’s afraid of festivals?” which will concentrate on the future of the most important festivals in order to understand, as the title provocatively suggests, if anyone really is afraid of festivals and if so who. Taormina Film Fest Artistic Director
Deborah Young is Taormina Film Fest’s new artistic director. She has been appointed by the Taormina Art Committee, formed by the Mayor of Taormina Carmelantonio D’Agostino, the President of the Province of Messina Salvatore Leonardi and Messina’s Mayor Francantonio Genovese. From 1999 to 2004 Deborah Young has been the vice-director of Taormina’s Festival. Journalist and film critic for “Variety”, she’s the Italian and Mediterranean industry news correspondent. Deborah Young is an American citizen, although she has been living in Rome for several years now. Presently she is the editor for Italy of New York magazine “Cineaste”. And since 2005 she has been an advisor for Tribeca Film Festival also in New York. She’s the artistic director of New Italian Cinema Events (N.I.C.E.), a showcase for new indie Italian cinema in New York, San Francisco, Amsterdam and Moscow. In 1988 she collaborated at the Venice Film Festival selections. From 1997 to 1999 she has been Colonia Artistica’s director, a meeting point founded by a group of New Yorkers for both Italian and American directors and screenwriters. Deborah Young has also been a jury member for various festivals like El Cairo, Edinburgh, Tribeca, Jerusalem, Haifa, Rio de Janeiro, Manaki Brothers Film Camera Festival (Macedonia), Varna (Bulgaria), Carthage, Milan African Film Festival, Naples (jury president), Rotterdam (Fipresci jury president), Mystfest, Pescara and the Grolle d’oro. Since 1999 she’s been a permanent member together with Mario Monicelli, Suso Cecchi D’Amico and Giuliano Montaldo of the Flaiano International Prize in Pescara. Since 2000 she has been a member of the foreign press cinema selection committee.   [link...]
