Taormina Arte Awards

Krzysztof Zanussi

Film director, born in Warsaw
in 1939, he studied Physics at the University
of Warsaw (1955-59), and Philosophy
at the University Jagellonica
of Krakow (1959-1962). Since 1980 he
has been artistic director of the production
company Film Studio TOR
and eventually its president. From
1971 to 1983 he was Vice-President of
the Polish Filmmaker Association and
from 1975 to 1977 President of the
Polish Federation Council of Film Club
Discussions. He taught in several film
schools, as the Superior Film School
PWSTiF of Lòdz and the National Film
School of Great Britain. As a theatrical
director he followed many stagings: in
Milan, Palermo, Bonn, Krakow, Bremen,
Basel. Among the many awards
and acknowledgments, he won a
David di Donatello, and is a Cavalier
of the Restituta Cross of Poland and a
Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des
Lettres (France). He is also the author
of numerous essays, as O montazu w
filmie amatorskim (On Art Editing ,
1968), Rozmowy o filmie amatorskim
(A Conversation on Art Movies , 1978),
quattro volumi di Scenari cinematografici
(Scenariusze filmowe ),
Pora umierac (It’s time to die , 1999),
Miedzy jarmarkiem a salonem
(Between Market and Living-room ,
1999). From 1990 to 1994 he was
President of the European Federation
of Audiovisual Director (FERA) and
President of Eurovisioni. He is also a
member of the Film Academy of Europe,
the Polish Academy of Science,
the PEN-Club, and the Association of
Polish Writers, as well as being a Doctor
Honoris Causa at the Film School
of Moscow WGIK, at the National University
of Drama and Cinematography
I.L. Caragiale (Bucharest), the European
Humanities University (Minsk),
the Bulgarian University (Sofia), the
University of Film and Television (Saint
Petersburg), the Catholic University
(Valencia) and the Catholic University
of Lublin (KUL).
