:: Cinema from Around the World ::
Twelve international films, some of which in international preview, are going
to be shown in the cinema halls of the Congress Centre. From this year on, this
section is a competition, and its films will be judged by an international Jury
which will confer the Taormina FilmFest Awards to:
a) Best director
b) Best actor
c) Best actress
d) Best supporting actor
e) Best supporting actress
f) Best photography director
The Taormina BNL FilmFest 2005 International Jury is made up of five leading personalities
of the international cinema, some of them already awarded during their prestigious
careers: the director Hugh Hudson (president), the actors Malcom McDowell and
Laura Morante, Moritz de Hadeln (former president of the festivals of Locarno,
Berlin and Venice, from this year general scheduling delegate of the Montreal
FilmFest) and Diego Lerer, film critic of the Argentine newspaper El Clarì.

NORDKRAFT

| Plot:
The unflinching story of Maria,
Allan and Steso, who are struggling
for survival in urban life. Maria is a
pusher, wandering restlessly among
addicts, abusers and bikers in a relentless
search for love, love which
her dealer boyfriend Asger is unable
to give her enough of. Allan has just
returned from an ill-fated trip across
the Pacific and must be careful and
stay clean, but ghosts from his past
return to haunt him, so he finds himself
at risk of losing both his newfound
love and his rejuvenated life.
Steso, the intellectual, god-forsaken
and prophetic cynic, does his utmost
to unite the two polar opposites that
give meaning to his life: his girl and
drugs. All three try desperately to
make some sense of the madness,
but how do you find meaning in the
chaos of life? And how do you find
love if you can’t recognize it?

| Plot:
1979: Qangattarsa, Greenland
– US Military Base. Rudy enlisted in
order to escape a little prison time for
burglary. His fellow soldiers are a
rag-tag bunch of misfits. There’s
Lavone, a wannabe beat-poet, the
sadistic Sergeant Genteen, and Petri,
the base dealer who thinks sci-fi
movies are the pinnacle of art. And
there’s the base’s commanding officer,
Colonel Woolwrap. Then Rudy
meets Sergeant Irene Teale – beautiful,
intelligent and most importantly,
sane. Unfortunately, she’s the
Colonel’s girlfriend. Things get worse
when he uncovers the secret of The
Wing: a hospice for American casualties
from a reckless mission in the
Vietnam war. Woolwrap has been sitting
there, waiting for the last of the
men to pass away. Meanwhile, the
“patients” remain unconscious, vegetative,
erased as the men they once
were. Except for Guy X.

| Plot:
After a brilliant career as a
fencer, at thirty-five Paolo is a sports
journalist of a local newspaper in Vicenza.
A friend of his, Franz, an exchampion
like himself, dies of a heart
attack. The man had become an
businessman in an industrial district
of the rich province. Unexpectedly,
Paolo finds out that his friend was
hiding some shadows in his life, and
even his death seems to be concealing
a mystery. For Paolo the search
for truth becomes an intrusion in a
hostile world that fascinates him but
also exposes him to ever increasing
risks. Among the people he meets is
Leo, a 10-year old child with a form of
autism. Indirectly, Leo will help Paolo
clear things on Franz life and on his
death.

| Plot:
Fifteen year old Mustafa is
nicknamed Schizo. He is hired by his
mother’s boyfriend to find fighters for
illegal fistfights. His life changes forever
when a young man mortally
beaten in one of the fights asks
Schizo to deliver his prize money to
his girlfriend and young son. Schizo
takes the money to the woman as
promised and falls in love with her.
Now he knows for whom he has to
make money, no matter what the
cost. In fistfights there are no rules…
until blood is spilled…

bring the circus back to its former
glory. However Joseph’s grand act
fails tragically, leaving him destroyed
forever…

| Plot:
Barbara Cagli is a tanztheater
dancer in her early thirties. Her sense
of freedom and lightness made David
Grünblatt, an English professor of
Physics in his fifties, fall in love with
her. The couple lives together in Trieste.
Suddenly a friend of Barbara’s,
Nadir Bacha, a forty year-old Kurdish
refugee released from prison, enters
their lives. Living together doesn’t
have a good start, in spite of Barbara’s
generosity, David’s goodwill
and Nadir’s expansive vitality that often
ends up being pushy. The tension
increases with every passing
day. David becomes obsessed and
eventually violent. Many things that
appear insignificant to Barbara, or
even nonexistent, are blown up by
David’s paranoia. To emerge from
the depths of misunderstanding, perhaps
reality should be observed
through the eyes of another.

| Plot:
Suburbia Dublin. Summer
gang wars and a local drug problem
has led to Niall living under curfew.
As his friends enjoy the typical trappings
of teenage life he is bored to
death. When Niall befriends Cel, a
very attractive teacher, he does his
best to keep Cel secret from his
friends and family. At this point a series
of events start to hinder Nialls’
fantastical plans for himself and Cel.
A major crackdown on the drug
gangs in the area creates a paranoid
environment amongst Niall and his
school friends, furthermore there is
the sudden arrival of his older cousin
Joe from Northern Ireland. When Joe
meets Cel, Niall’s world turns upside
down, leading him to contemplate
and fantasise terrible plans of revenge,
blind to the reality of Cel and
Joe’s station in his life…

Agata, Marta, Ola, Paulina and
Pawel often meet at parties, go to
clubs together, and during weekends
go to a country house at
Mazury Lakes, where they scuba
dive. The night before going to the
lake they go to a club. The girls have
an impression that someone is
watching them. They spot a handsome
guy looking at them. Two foreign
guys they just met invite them to
their place. The handsome guy –
Szymon – turns out to be their driver.
Szymon wakes up the next morning
in a hospital. He was supposed to
drive one of the girls home last night.
All he remembers are vague images
– the car, speed, the woods, blood…
The nurse brings him to a girl, all in
bandage. She’s dying. It turns out
that someone by accident gave her
the wrong type of blood…

CALL OF GABRIEL Ava-Ye Jebreyeel

| Plot:
Gabriel and his two sisters,
Medina and Zeynab, leave a village
in Ardebil and set for Qiravan, situated
beyond the jungles of the northern
part of Iran, known as the “Cloud
Jungle”. They reach a nearby village
and are advised that they should be
assisted by a guide in order to reach
Qiravan. Despite the advise, they set
out for the town but can’t reach it and
have to return to the village to find a
guide. However they are informed
that the guide has left and will not be
back for a few days. So Gabriel decides
to leave his two sisters in the
village and go find the place alone,
but fails once again and returns to his
sisters…

I AM A SEX ADDICT

| Plot:
It all started in Paris about
twenty years ago when Caveh is
mired in the midst of an unhappy marriage
to a French woman. Or maybe it
all started when Caveh was nine and
his father had an affair with another
woman, precipitating his parent’s divorce.
Or maybe it all started in college,
when Caveh fell in love with
Anna. However it started, one day in
Paris Caveh makes love to a prostitute
and ruins his marriage. He moves
to Los Angeles to attend film school
but starts cruising the streets in his
car, picking up prostitutes. At each
encounter he vows to himself it will be
his last, and yet each encounter feeds
his desire for more. His love life is at a
dead end. Could it be sex addiction?
And if yes, is there a cure?

THE FEVER

| Plot:
An Englishwoman wakes up in
the middle of the night in a small hotel
in a city where a civil war is being
fought. She has a fever, and tries to
remember why she returned to this
frightening country. During the night,
she starts to retrace her happy childhood
and her relatively happy adult
existence as a kind, hard-working
professional woman. It will be a long
night, but as the dawn breaks, her
fever subsides and with it comes an
honest appraisal of herself: she fi-
nally understands how she, too, is responsible
for the violence, poverty,
and exploitation she sees in the
world.

A jury formed by the audience will confer the BNL Award for the Best Long Feature
Film for the best first or second work, it is sponsored by the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro and amounts to E. 25.000.
As usual, another jury formed by five critics will confer the FIPRESCI Prize to the best full-length film. This jury is presided by the great French critic Michel Ciment (France) and is composed by Borislav Andjelic (Serbia - Montenegro), Pamela Bienzobas (Chile), Francisco Ferreira (Portugal) and Umberto Rossi (Italy).
