Taormina Arte Awards for Cinematic Excellence

Joel Schumacher

Date: 11/06/2003

Born and raised in New York City, where he studied Design and Display at the Parsons School of Design, he began his career in the entertainment industry as an art director for television commercials before becoming costume designer for important films as Woody Allen’s Sleeper and Interiors, Herbert Ross’s The Last of Sheila, and Paul Mazursky’s Blume in Love. He then wrote the lyrics for the musical Sparkle, music by Motown, and the “funky” comedy Car Wash. He made his directing debut with the TV movie The Virginia Hill Story. The Incredible Shrinking Woman, marked his feature film directing debut, followed by D.C. Cab. He is also the co-screenwriter with Carl Kurlander of St. Elmo’s Fire. In 1988, he directed the Chicago staging of the burning Hollywood satire by David Mamet Speed-The-Plow, and in 1995 directed Batman Forever followed by its successful sequel, Batman and Robin. Before Batman Forever, Schumacher directed the critically-acclaimed hit film version of the John Grisham novel, The Client and the highly successful adaptation of another Grisham novel, A Time to Kill: these two films are considered the best film adaptations of the novelist’s books. Among other films, he directed the thriller 8 mm, starring Nicholas Cage, Flawless, Bad Company and Tigerland. Schumacher also directed a series of socially committed Emmy® awarded commercials for the MTV campaign Fight For Your Rights: Take A Stand Against Violence, as well as two series of Protect Yourself, a promotional campaign for safe sex by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
