Taormina Arte Awards for Cinematic Excellence

Miklos Jancso

Date: 09/06/2003

Born in Vác, Hungary, on 1921 he is considered the director representative of the so-called Hungarian film school. He studied folklore and art history at the University of Cluj. Between 1946 and 1950 he concluded his studies at the film director faculty of the Budapest College of Theatrical and Film Arts. He shot A harangok Rómába mentek (The Bells Have Gone to Rome) in 1958. His next film, Oldás és kötés (Cantata), was completed in 1963, the film Így jöttem (My Way Home) in 1964. The film entitled Szegénylegények (The Round-Up) is a peculiar interpretation of the history of a 19th century outlaw, this film was followed by Csend és kiáltás (Silence and Cry), Csillagosok, katonák (The Red and The White) and by the film Fényes szelek (The Confrontation). Miklós Jancsó developed a characteristic film language, characterised by long sets, and sweeping horizontal camera movements. The portrayal through film tools of the relationship between the individual and power, the power and the community is present throughout his life’s work. He lived in Italy during the 1970s where he also made several films (La pacifista, Vices and Pleasures). The films Még kér a nép (Red Psalm), 1971 and Allegro Barbaro, 1978, mark the beginning of his new period as a director. The film Szerelmem, Elektra (Electreia) also belongs to this period. From 1975 he was also active as a theatrical director. In the films shot during the 1980s and 1990s he once again adopted new film making tools Szörnyek évadja (Season of Monsters), Jézus Krisztus horoszkópja (Jesus Christ’s Horoscope), Kék Duna keringö (Blue Danube Waltz), Nekem lámpást adott kezembe az Úr Pesten (The Lord’s Lantern in Budapest), Anyád! A szúnyogok (Damn You! The Mosquitoes), Utolsó vacsora az Arabs Szürkénél (Last Supper at the Arabian Grey Horse). He won the Kossuth Prize and the title Outstanding Artist. He was awarded the Prize for his Life’s Work in Cannes in 1979, at the Venice Film Festival in 1990 and at the Hungarian Feature Film Show in 1994. Since 1988 he has been a professor at the College of Theatrical and Film Arts, he taught at Harvard University between 1990 and 1992.
