A pochi giorni dall'arrivo dell'anno Mille - portatore secondo i profeti di terribili sventure - il cavaliere Fortunato e i due soldati Pannocchia e Carestia attraversano l'Italia tra incredibili avventure: arriverà l'anno fatidico ma l'unica disgrazia di cui ci sarà traccia sarà la scoperta da parte del cavaliere del tradimento della moglie.
