Gianni, Nicola and Antonio, having fought for the partisans and together matured strong ideals, lose contact with each other after the war: Antonio becomes a hospital -orderly at the San Camillo in Rome; Gianni becomes a lawyer; Nicola teaches in Nocera, marries Luciana and fights as an idealist for a style of cinema which will transform society. Luciana is the one who discovers Antonio and who Gianni takes away, later abandoning him to become a part, through marriage, of a family of a builder with no social conscience. Occasionally the three meet. After many years, when time and society has greatly re-evaluated heroes, they unexpectedly meet and are able to examine themselves closely. Luciana, who has married Antonio, is with them.
