In 1943, Countess Luisa, her son Andrea, his cousin Carlo, son of a fascist 'gerarca', and Ferruccio, a family friend, have retreated to a Villa on the outskirts of Milan to avoid the bombings. The young ones keep themselves occupied as best they can: Carlo is the only one fully aware of the troublesome times they are going through and the tragic situation they are in. Andrea's love for Lucia, an evacuee living in the villa, and the arrival of a group of dispersed soldiers who escaped from the Germans, awakens Andrea from his carefree attitude, bringing him back to reality and giving him a sense of responsibility. In the absence of his mother, who returned to Milan, Andrea welcomes the soldiers, gaining the sympathy of his cousin Carlo and Luisa's love. Andrea's brave gesture provokes Ferruccio: the Germans are informed of all activities taking place in the Villa. The soldiers decide to take to the mountains by means of truck ; Carlo, Lucia and Andrea decide to join them. At the last minute, Countess Luisa returns and Andrea, influenced by his mother, abandons the idea of following his friends. From the security of a German car, which is taking him to Switzerland, Andrea hears the shots of German machine guns; Luca is killed and the young man has a sudden feeling of irreparable tragedy.
