Daniele Dominici is a young Professor of Literature, temporarily
teaching at a Rimini high-school. Author of small poetry book dedicated
to a sixteen year old girl who died; cohabitating with Monica, who
perhaps is his wife but maybe just his lover; unmoved by the controversy
brewing in his classroom; lacking an authentic inclination for teaching
(although a cultured man), has instead a strong predisposition for
gambling and falls in love with his beautiful student, Vanina, whose
lover, Gerardo is a young and rich local boy. The girl however becomes
his lover although both her mother and the aggressive Gerardo do
their best to prevent the relationship. Daniele becomes even more
attached to the girl after discovering Monica has been unfaithful.
After having beaten up Gerardo, who informed him of Vanina's stormy
past, they plan to run away together. Monica then threatens to commit
suicide and Daniele, fearful of what she may do, retracts his decision
to leave her. In a bewildered state of mind, dazed by the thrashing
received by Vanina's mothers companion, Daniele, driving along in
his car, does not see a truck crashing straight into it.
