In March 1943 the code breakers at Bletchley Park, Britain's top
secret Station X, are facing their worst nightmare: Nazi U boats
have unexpectedly changed the code by which they communicate with
each other and German High Command. An Allied merchant shipping
convoy crossing the Atlantic with 10,000 passengers and vital supplies
is in danger of attack. The authorities turn for help to Tom Jericho,
a brilliant young mathematician and code breaker.
Unknown to his colleagues, Jericho has another equally baffling
enigma of his own to unravel: Claire, the woman with whom he has
fallen in love, has disappeared from Bletchley just when the authorities
suspect there may be a spy at the Park.
To get to the bottom of both mysteries he enlists the help of Hester,
Claire's best friend. Together they keep one step ahead of the secret
services and investigate Claire's mysterious life, reaching a conclusion
that uncovers international and personal betrayals.
Michael Apted
Michael Apted studied law and history at Cambridge University,
then worked at Granada Television as a researcher. Within a few
years, he became a prominent and versatile TV director, winning
several British Emmys for his work. He made his feature debut with
Triple Echo and scored a hit with Stardust. After The Squeeze and
the intriguing Agatha, Apted had his first international hit with
Coal Miner's Daughter, the biography of country singer Loretta Lynn,
which won Sissy Spacek a Best Actress Oscar. Since then Apted has
tackled a variety of films, but tries to alternate Hollywood movies
with smaller, more personal projects and documentaries. His credits
include Continental Divide, Kipperbang, Gorky Park, Bring on the
Night, Critical Condition, Gorillas in the Mist, Class Action, Thunderheart,
Incident at Oglala, and Nell. But Apted's most remarkable achievement
remains his unique series of documentaries -7 Up, 7 Plus 7, 21,
28 Up and 35 Up-which have followed the lives of 14 Britons since
the age of seven-in seven-year increments.
