Gina Lollobrigida
| When Americans got their first look at "La
Lollo" in the late 1940s, she was proclaimed the best
thing to come from Italy since spaghetti. She held that distinction
until being eclipsed by Sophia Loren (a younger bombshell
and better actress) in the late 1950s. Lollobrigida, a graduate
of the Rome Academy of Fine Arts well versed in painting and
sculpture, never became a professional artist but, instead,
inspired artists-first as a model, then as a muchphotographed
beauty-contest winner. Within a few years of her film debut
in Aquila Nera (1946) the earthy, voluptuous Lollobrigida
had become one of the Italian film industry's top stars. Originally
slated for an American film debut in 1949, she lost the opportunity
due to a contract foul-up with Howard Hughes. Ironically,
her first "Hollywood" film was John Huston's Beat
the Devil (1954), which was largely shot in Italy. When she
finally got to Hollywood, she was seen as just another |

sex symbol, and she was shunted from one
witless picture to another. Lollobrigida returned to Europe,
and retired from the screen in the early 1970s to market
cosmetics and fashions. She also put some of her artistic
training to use as a professional photographer. She made
a couple of appearances in European-made TV dramas in the
mid 1980s, still looking beautiful.
